I have always been a dog lover. I never thought that I would fall so much in love with my Golden Retriever puppy. That playful pup brought me so much joy I can’t explain it. I became obsessed with everything Golden Retriever. Before I knew it, I had a large collection of Golden Retriever collectibles.
Golden Retriever Statues
I think it started with a musical Golden Retriever puppy statue. My husband and I were shopping and we spotted a store that sold music boxes. There it was. A Golden Retriever puppy statue that would play the song “Plaything” when you wound it up. The song goes “Plaything, come out and play with me”. It was perfect. My puppy was so active and playful that we couldn’t wait for him to take a nap. It was as if it was just waiting for us to buy it.
That was the beginning. I started buying statues of puppies and adult Golden Retrievers.
One of my favorite statues is a mother Golden Retriever and her puppy. The mother is leaning down and grooming her baby.
My collection grew when I started receiving statues as gifts. Now when my granddaughters come to visit, my Golden Retriever statues are one of their favorite things to play with. They know they must be very careful with them as the statues are very special to me.
Golden Retriever Collector Plates
I must have been on some kind of list. I started getting advertisements in the mail for all kinds of Golden Retriever Items.
My next obsession became collector plates. Beautiful Golden Retrievers and Golden Retriever puppies pictured on the plates with various props. The plates displayed puppies sleeping on blankets or in beds, holding a ball in its mouth or chewing its favorite chew toy. They also showed Golden Retrievers hunting, playing in the snow or just hanging with nature. Of course that was just a few.
Every month I would receive a new collector plate. I had them displayed everywhere. Now they are packed in a closet. I cannot bear to part with them.
Other Golden Retriever Stuff
So I started buying everything Golden Retriever. It was not just limited to statues and collector plates.
My friend sold Christmas decorations every year. Every year I would buy a decoration with a Golden Retriever on it. I have a couple of statues with Santa Claus with a Golden Retriever.
A tradition that still holds in my household is a Golden Retriever calendar every year. Included in our Christmas preparation is ordering a calendar. Each year it is prominently displayed on my kitchen wall.
I can’t explain why but this is very important to us.
Every time I see a small stuffed Golden Retriever toy, I buy it. I have stationery, envelopes, pads, mouse pads, key rings, mugs and book markers. If they sell, I have it.
Golden Retriever Books
Books on how to train a Golden Retriever are good to have. There are many aspects of their personalities. It’s great to have a guide into their personalities so you could understand your Golden and get the full Golden Retriever experience. You will be a happy owner and your Golden will be happy and be the best companion he could be.
I also bought a book full of pictures of Golden Retrievers from puppies to older Goldens. Beautiful pictures showing them at play, swimming and hunting. They are great hunting dogs and they love the outdoors. I love looking at the pictures of Golden Retrievers at the various stages of their lives.
Why The Obsession
My Golden Retriever, Buddy, was a big part of my life for twelve years and he gave me so much joy. Also, they are such beautiful dogs with wonderful temperaments and personalities I just loved having those things around.
I’m sure all dog lovers feel that way about their special breed.
Now that he is no longer with us, looking at them helps me remember the love, joy and pleasure it was to have shared my life with my wonderful Golden Retriever, Buddy.
Or maybe, they make me feel that he is still around.
