My favorite breed of dog is the Golden Retriever. I had a Golden Retriever, so I guess I’m a little bias.
Actually, there are six different types of Retrievers.
- Golden Retriever
- Labrador Retriever
- Chesapeake Bay Retriever
- Curly Coated Retriever
- Flat Coated Retriever
- Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever
I have written a few blogs about the Golden Retriever. Now I’d like to write a little about the other Retrievers.
There are six different types of Retrievers. Each Retriever dog is unique and bred to work in different environments even though the tasks are similar.
Retrievers are one of the most versatile breeds. The Retriever is a type of gun dog. Retrievers are bred to Retrieve for hunters. They also can be great family dogs, arson dogs, bomb detection dogs, drug detection dogs, seeing eye guides, search and rescue dogs and much more.
Retrievers must be well-trained, They have good memories. Retrievers are eager to please, therefor they follow directions and stay focused on there tasks.
Labrador Retriever
The Labrador Retriever is a large breed gun-dog. The Labrador is the most popular dog breed in America. Labs are friendly, outgoing, affectionate and very active. They have no problem bonding with there whole family and they socialize well with other dogs and humans alike.
Like the Gold Retriever, the Labrador needs lots of exercise. They love swimming and games of fetch.
On a personal note, my Golden Retriever, Buddy, had a Labrador Retriever, Henry, as his best friend. Every evening we would go for long walks, go to the park or the dog run. Sometimes we would go to the beach.
You could see the excitement in these two dogs when they first saw each other.
They loved each other. I know Buddy loved Henry. I loved Henry.
Chesapeake Bay Retriever
The Chesapeake Bay Retriever is not as common as the Golden Retriever or the Labrador Retriever. Chesapeake Bay Retrievers are large dogs who is known for hunting waterfowl.
The Chesapeake has a curly coat that is also waterproof. Their toes are webbed making them powerful swimmers. They also have powerful chests making them able to break ice apart when hunting for ducks.

These dogs have been nicknamed “curlies”. They are very smart and easy to train. They also make loyal companions.
The Curly Coated Retriever needs plenty of exercise and mental stimulation. Given the proper exercise and stimulation, the Curly Coated Retriever can.be a great family pet.
.
Flat Coated Retriever
The Flat Coated Retriever has a flat coat. Like the other retrievers, it is a gun dog bred for retrieving both on land and in the water. The Flat Coated Retriever usually has a black coat but also can be dark brown or yellow.
At one time the Flat Coated Retriever was very popular, Its popularity decreased as popularity for the Golden Retriever increased.
The Flat Coated Retriever is also very intelligent and eager to please. They also need plenty of exercise and mental stimulation.
Because they have a great sense of smell, they make great drug sniffer dogs. Also, they have great temperaments which makes them good assistance dogs.

It’s obvious that although they come in different colors, coats and sizes, they are very similar. All the Retrievers are smart, well tempered, easy to train and loyal companions. They were also all bred for hunting waterfowl.
Each breed needs plenty of exercise and loves to have tasks to perform.
So which Retriever is your favorite? I’m biased. I had a Golden Retriever.
